We’re all afraid of something! But do you know how to talk about your fears in English? It’s so important to be able to talk about all of your feelings, emotions, and concerns when you’re learning a new language. That’s why I am a strong believer in teaching my students all of the vocabulary they may need. In this post we are going to go over words to talk about fear — adjectives, nouns, and verbs. We will also look at common phobias, or things that people are often afraid of. 

Vocabulary to Talk About Fear

  1. Dread

Definition: A strong feeling of fear about something that may happen.

Example Sentence: I’m feeling a lot of dread about the exam tomorrow.

  1. Anxiety

Definition: A very strong feeling of unease or worry, often uncontrollable.

Example Sentence: Public speaking can cause anxiety for many people.

  1. Worry

Definition: To think about problems or fears, causing distress.

Example Sentence: She couldn’t sleep because she was always worrying about her job.

  1. Terrifying

Definition: Causing extreme fear.

Example Sentence: The horror movie was so terrifying that I couldn’t watch it until the end.

  1. Unsettling

Definition: Causing emotional or mental discomfort and making someone feel uneasy.

Example Sentence: The strange noises in their new house were quite unsettling.

  1. Uneasy

Definition: Feeling uncomfortable, often due to uncertainty.

Example Sentence: He felt uneasy about the sudden change in plans.

  1. Nervous

Definition: Feeling anxious, especially about a specific event.

Example Sentence: She was very nervous for the last round of the job interviews.

  1. Scared

Definition: Feeling frightened or alarmed.

Example Sentence: My brother was scared of the dark when we were young kids.

  1. Afraid

Definition: Feeling fear or apprehension about something.

Example Sentence: I’m afraid of heights, so I avoid tall buildings.

  1. Phobia

Definition: An extreme and irrational fear of a specific object, situation, or activity.

Example Sentence: A fear of flying is a common phobia that some people experience.

7. Aerophobia: Fear of flying

8. Thanatophobia: Fear of death

9. Hemophobia: Fear of blood

10. Glossophobia: Fear of public speaking

By learning these words and how to use them correctly and easily in conversation, you’ll be able to talk about the things that scare you. This can be an interesting conversation, or it can help you express why you don’t want to do certain things.
